Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology
The American Psychological Association has accredited our Ph.D. Clinical Psychology
program since 1979. By emphasizing the three traditional functions of clinical research,
diagnostic assessment, and psychotherapy, we prepare clinical psychologists who will
be able to serve in a wide range of professional contexts. We also provide a broad
and flexible view of the discipline of psychology that enables graduates to engage
in new fields of interest and emerging specializations.
On the continuum between practitioner and researcher, the Clinical Psychology Program
at the University of Toledo strives for an equal balance between research and practice,
emphasizing clinically-relevant research and research-informed practice. Training
in research conceptualization and methodology is an integral part of the education
sequence, as is the development of knowledge and skills for direct clinical intervention.
To support research development, students enrolled in the Clinical Program have the opportunity to:
- Take a grant-writing seminar and/or participate in professional development workshops focused on grant writing:
- Receive joint mentoring from faculty members in the experimental area
- Apply for student-specific competitive research and travel awards to fund research projects and travel to professional conferences.
To support clinical development, Clinical Program students participate in group supervision
in the context of vertical teams, engage in supervised clinical activities in local
community settings, and attend and present in our ongoing program-wide professional
development and clinical case presentation series.
