Elective Description/Requirements: Students will evaluate and manage Emergency Department (ED) patients under the direct supervision of the EM Faculty. Students will perform history and physical examinations, document findings in the medical record, order appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, assess response to therapy, and determine appropriate patient dispositions. Students will conduct follow-up communications with select patients to assess short-term response to therapy, ensure follow-up instructions are being followed, and assist with any problems under guidance of the ED faculty and staff. Students will complete 90 clinical hours in the ED.

- Interpret EKG, laboratory and radiology studies as applied to patient evaluation and treatment. (EPOs: PC-6)

- Demonstrate appropriate interpersonal communication with patients, families, physicians, EMS personnel, and ancillary staff. (EPOs: MK-2, MK-3, IPC-1, IPC-2, IPC-3, PB-1, PB-2, PB-3, IPC-2)
- Assess acutely ill patients and develop a plan for immediate stabilization and definitive care by recognizing abnormal vital signs, abnormal physical exams, and interpreting lab data. (EPOs: PC-1, PC-6, PC-8, )
- Describe how the evaluation and treatment of specific clinical conditions vary between a patient who presents with an acute condition vs a patient with a chronic condition. (EPOs: PC-7, PC-8)
- Explain the rationale for utilizing a specific consultative service. (EPOs: IPC-2)
- Describe the steps and demonstrate the performance of clinical procedures such as venipuncture, intravenous catheters, urinary catheter placement, laceration repair and nasogastric tube placement. (EPOs: PC-5, PC-6, PC-7)

- Individual case management with faculty
- Direct observation and interaction by faculty.
Assessment Methods:
- M4 Clinical Elective competency assessment
- Mock Code exam or alternate written exam (in case of extenuating circumstances)
- NBME or Departmental written exam (in case of extenuating circumstances)
- Assessment of patient case log, procedure log, and hours log
- Mid-point evaluation with a faculty preceptor
Prerequisites: Successful completion of third year and passing USMLE Step 1 score.
