Elective Description/Requirements: An "internship" experience emphasizing primary responsibility for acutely ill patients on a busy inpatient service. Direct supervision provided by the ward resident. Numerous educational conferences available including daily noon conference, morning report, grand rounds, attending rounds, and medical student case presentation conference twice weekly with core faculty. Student will also be expected to share one of their patients in a case presentation to the student group at the end of the rotation.

Length of Course: 4 weeks

Educational Course Objectives and Links to EPOs:

  1. Interview patients and review pertinent medical records collecting data concerning the patients’ presenting problems. (EPOs: PC-1)
  2. Perform a complete or focused physical examination as appropriate and distinguish normal from abnormal findings. (EPOs: PC-1)
  3. Synthesize information to develop a reasonable differential diagnosis and be prepared to present to the preceptor. (EPOs: PC-7)
  4. Describe the patient’s chief problems and develop a plan for treatment. (EPOs: PC-7)
  5. Prepare a complete H & P for new patients admitted to the service and chart the results. (EPOs: PC-1)
  6. Periodically re-evaluate patients’ status including interpretation of new history and physical exam findings (EPOs: PC-1)
  7. Interpret laboratory and radiographic tests used in the diagnosis of common medical diseases. (EPOs: PC-6)
  8. Recognize and manage situations related to common diseases that are potential emergencies. (EPOs: PC-8)
  9. Identify ethical problems which arise in patient treatment and care. (EPOs: PB-1, PC-2)
  10. Participate in evening or weekend clinical care to support continuity of patient care and demonstrate professionalism in varied clinical settings. (EPO: IPC-2)
  11. Conduct structured patient handoffs using an evidence‑based communication approach to ensure safe and accurate transfer of care. (EPO: SBP-1)

Special Requirements:

  1. As part of the acting internship, students are required to participate in at least one evening or weekend clinical experience.  This experience ensures exposure to the full spectrum of patient care responsibilities and supports readiness for residency-level schedules and work environment.
  2. Students are expected to participate in structured patient handoffs as part of their clinical responsibilities.  This includes observing and contributing to the sign-out processes to ensure safe, effective transitions of care.
  3. Students will be expected to be in the hospital six days a week. Call will be every fourth night.
