Elective Description/Requirements:
Students serving as acting interns will function in the role of a primary physician
for a small number of patients. The resident on the medical service as well as the
attending physician will supervise the student. Students will perform all duties expected
of an intern on an internal medicine service including performing the initial history
and physical and written admitting orders, progress notes and discharge summaries.
A didactic and bedside lecture course focused toward the pathophysiology and clinical
assessment of all organ systems as they pertain to critically ill patients will be
presented. Student management of critically ill patients will emphasize the pathophysiology,
assessment and management of respiratory failure (including interpretation of EKG’s
and the use of mechanical ventilation), the pathophysiology and management of shock
and multiple organ failure syndrome (including the use and interpretation of invasive
hemodynamic monitoring), and nutritional support of the critically ill.

- Perform a complete or focused physical examination as appropriate and distinguish normal from abnormal findings. (EPOs: PC-1)
- Synthesize information to develop a reasonable differential diagnosis and be prepared to present to the preceptor. (EPOs: PC-7)
- Following an assessment of all assigned patients, students will describe the chief problems and a plan for treatment. (EPOs: PC-7)
- Prepare a complete H & P for a new patient admitted to the service and chart the results. (EPOs: PC-1)
- Periodically re-evaluate patients’ status including interpretation of new history and physical exam findings (EPOs: PC-1)
- Document clinical encounters in the medical record. (EPOs: PC-1)
- Communicate concise, pertinent information at the time of handoff. (EPOs: IPC-1, IPC-2)
- Use and interpret laboratory and radiographic tests used in diagnosing common diseases. (EPOs: PC-6, MK-4)
- Recognize and manage situations related to common diseases that are potential emergencies. (EPOs: PC-8)
- Apply principles of health systems science in addressing clinical care issues for your patients. (EPOs: SBP-1, SBP-2, SBP-3, Â SBP-5, PB-1)
- Incorporate feedback, self-reflection and improvement into daily practice. (EPOs: PBL-1, Â PBL-3)
- Identify ethical problems which arise in patient treatment and care. (EPOs: PB-1, PC-2)

Prerequisites: Successful completion of required Internal Medicine Clerkship
Special Requirements:
- As part of the acting internship, students are required to participate in at least one evening or weekend clinical experience. Â This experience ensures exposure to the full spectrum of patient care responsibilities and supports readiness for residency-level schedules and work environment.
- Students are expected to participate in structured patient handoffs as part of their clinical responsibilities. Â This includes observing and contributing to the sign-out processes to ensure safe, effective transitions of care.
- Students will be expected to be in the hospital six or seven days a week. Call will be every fourth night on average.
