Elective Description/Requirements:
The focus will be to develop a more sophisticated understanding of basic and clinical sciences as they pertain to reconstructive and cosmetic surgical procedures. Evaluation of pre and post operative management of the plastic surgery patient. ÌýFor students pursuing Plastic Surgery as a career.

Length of Clerkship: 4 weeks

  1. Perform and document a proficient surgical history and physical examination with pertinent findings. EPOs: ÌýIPC-1, IPC-2, PC-1, PC-3, PC-2, PC-4
  2. Identify and explain Ìýthe indications for cosmetic surgical procedures. EPOs: PC-7, PC-8, MK-4, MK-7
  3. Acquire basic procedure by demonstrating tissue handling technique, suturing technique, and skin closure. EPOs: PC-6
  4. Apply principles of the basic science of wound management, including performing debridement and dressing changes. EPOs: PC-6, PC-8, PC-9, PC-10, MK-7
  5. Accurately present the key steps of cosmetic procedures. EPOs: PC-6, MK-7
  6. Demonstrate the ability to evaluate a tissue defect and formulate a reconstructive plan. EPOs: PC-8, PC-10
  7. Identify the important anatomic findings related to the various normal and pathologic conditions encountered on the service. EPOs: PC-2, PC-3, PC-7, PC-8, MK-1, MK-2, MK-7
  8. Implement a plan for Ìýpostoperative pain management and the pharmacology of commonly used narcotic conditions encountered on the service. EPOs: PC-8, MK-6
