Storage and Security Requirements
This page details the storage and security requirements for controlled substances and dangerous drugs used in research.
- All Schedule III-V controlled substances must be stored in a locked, substantially constructed cabinet.聽 All Schedule I and II controlled substances must be stored in a locked, substantially constructed cabinet, bolted to the floor or wall.聽 Examples can be found from聽.
- The cabinet should not have a glass panel where controlled substances can be visible from the outside.
- All controlled substances must be double-locked (i.e., the storage cabinet must be locked and the room itself must remain locked).聽
- All controlled substances must be stored at the location address on the DEA registration and the Board of Pharmacy license.
- Registrants and authorized users must take all precautions to guard against theft.聽
This includes, but is not limited to:
- Restricting the number of keys that access the controlled substances
- Restricting the number of authorized agents that have access to keys
- Changing combination codes, if combination locks are used, during staff turnover
- All dangerous drugs (non-controlled prescription drugs) must be stored in a laboratory that is locked when not occupied.
