JCCTR Mentor Program
The JCCTR Research Mentor Program recognizes COMLS faculty members who maintain active research programs centered on mentoring medical students in clinical and translational research. Research Mentor status grants access to JCCTR resources and visibility as a designated research contact, while requiring an ongoing commitment to medical student mentorship and professional conduct.
All faculty members in COMLS are eligible to apply.
Member Benefits
Research Mentors receive access to the following JCCTR services and resources:
- Poster printing and poster design services
- Assistance developing compelling research abstracts
- Publication support
- Medical Student Travel support to attend the Central Society for Clinical and Translational Research (CSCTR) annual meeting when presenting an abstract or oral presentation as first author
- Access to illustration software for presentations, publications, and grant applications.
- Access to the JCCTR conference room, equipped with state-of-the-art video conferencing
capabilities
Guidelines for Becoming a Mentor
To become a Research Mentor, a candidate must meet the following criteria:
- Be a faculty member in good standing with an active research program.
- Mentor at least one medical student per year; this is a firm requirement, not optional.
- Submit an annual report of research activity involving medical students, including presentations and publications.
Conditional Fellows: New faculty members may enter as conditional Research Mentors for their first year, with the stipulation that they involve medical students in their research projects during that period.
Public listing: Research Mentors are listed on the JCCTR website as potential research contacts for medical students.
Ongoing Requirements
Maintaining Research Mentor status requires continued engagement, not a one-time application. Each Research Mentor must submit an annual update documenting research productivity and medical student involvement.
Compliance and Disciplinary Provisions
Failure to report or lack of productivity: Failure to provide the annual update, or lack of productivity involving medical students, will result in suspension of Research Mentor privileges. Suspended faculty may reapply annually, provided they are actively involving medical students in their research.
Unprofessional conduct: Reports of unprofessional behavior toward students, faculty, or staff as described according to University of Toledo policies will result in suspension or termination of the Research Mentor status.
